Our region is a land of stark contrasts. Stunning beauty and a diversity and wealth of culture exist in states that have some of the highest poverty rates in the nation. But the economics can change. At ACCION New Mexico • Arizona • Colorado we have placed more than $27.3 million into the hands of small business people who are creating revolutionary changes. This is not rhetoric; this is a fact. Our dollars have produced impressive results:

  • A 1998 study has shown from the time entrepreneurs first become clients to the time of their third ACCION loan application, they experience average increases of 61% in business revenue, 71% in business assets, 87% in take-home business income and 21% in overall household income.
  • Research has also shown that low-income clients who received three consecutive loans experienced average increases of 231% in business profitability, 32% in household income and 88% in take-home business income.
  • About 94% of ACCION clients repay their loans, and some become contributors to the organization.
  • Dollars Lent $27.3 million
  • Businesses Served 2,604
  • Loans Issued 4,245

Numbers Can’t Tell our Whole Story.

Human dignity and hope do not show up on a balance sheet. The impact a successful business has on the owner, his family and the entire community is incalculable. There is a ripple effect that starts with the owner’s improved financial health, works its way to strengthening the local economy and tax base and helps break the cycle of poverty. Economic power leads to more freedom of choice. When you build economic power, you also break down the barriers to improved education, health care and other resources that are a community's life blood.
